From Show Display to Chic Statement: Meet Colin, the Upcycled Console Table

So I sourced this console table from a community group on Facebook, when I was looking for something to use as a display stand at an upcoming event.   Obviously as it was an event to show off my work I just had to add my own flair to the table.  And so the journey began from practical to chic.

The Preparation

First the messy stuff, the table was disassembled, sanded, filled where necessary and finally given two coats of undercoat.  Now I’m ready to have some fun.

The design

Again starting with my favourite paint, Little Greene intelligent matt,  in dark blue everything was painted with two coats.  When I stood back it was just too plain, personally I love silver, so I looked where I could introduce that.  Who doesn’t love silver and dark blue – its just perfect.

I added silver detailing to the top of the legs and a silver 5mm border to the top of the table.  The small drawer in the centre of the table I kept plain blue, but added a silver knob and initially  painted the inside with metallic silver paint (not such a good idea, more about that in a minute).  The whole piece was given two coats of varnish for protection and it was complete (I thought), but I just didn’t like the interior of the drawer I painted.  The metallic paint just didn’t look right: it wasn’t even, it was yuk!  So I went to plan ‘B’  silver leaf, a bit of metal leaf size, some silver leaf and an hour later the (for me) perfect finish.

The ends in sight

Time to put the table back together, or so I thought, but the fixings were silver and they looked cheap so I gave them a quick coat of matt black and re-assembled the table – now he’s done, and just to grand to be a display table and so he’s here waiting for his new forever home.
